most people that know john mccain, and i consider him a friend, he would say he's a patriot. he wants to know the truth. this is about what he just said. it's about four people died in benghazi that didn't have to. i think senator mccain is doing his job along with senator graham to get to the bottom and the best the way they know how. and i fully support their actions and their words. >> but they're making this -- they're talking about watergate. they're talking about iran contra. and these false equivalencies that just don't seem to match up. it just doesn't pass the smell test. >> what senator mccain and senator graham have been doing the last couple of weeks is working the senate structure and gate effort government structure to find out what truly happened. senators that have oversight over this issue. that's what they're supposed to do, and that's what they are doing. i'm sorry people are getting ruffled about this, but this is a serious matter. i don't doubt anybody is not upset that we have dead americans. but they are trying the best way they know how within the syst

i'm learning senator john mccain is calling for a select committee on the benghazi attack. >> seek to blame a spontaneous demonstration for the attack in benghazi when it was later acknowledged that no protest even occurred in benghazi and that the station chief in tripoli was reporting back in the first 24 hours that it was a terrorist attack. why did president obama insist that he labeled the events in benghazi as an act of terrorism on september 12th and then emphasized that in his second debate with governor romney and we now know that in an interview with "60 minutes" on the same day, he explicitly refused to characterize the attack this way. and he then spent nearly two weeks putting the emphasis on a spontaneous protest to a hateful video including in his address to the united nations on september 25th. why did our ambassador to the united nations in interviews five days after the attack also try to blame on the hateful video when it was clear from the earliest hours of the attack that it was sophisticated, that it was a sophisticated offensive that no protest ever occurred out

. >> sir, if senator john mccain has called for a watergate style investigation into the attack, basically asking for a select committee coming out earlier this week with senators to say they aren't going to get enough information through what we're seeing in the testimony of petraeus and thinks there is an under current here of something else. do you agree that there needs to be a select committee formed? >> oraniginally i didn't becausi think that's our job on the intelligence committee but i heard senator mccain say we have homeland security, we have judiciary, armed services, foreign affairs, and intelligence committees. so for the sake of trying to get everybody on the same page without having constantly to call these witnesses over and over again, and monopolizing really the next year it is maybe a good idea but my focus on this as a former prosecutor has always been why did those americans die and what could we have done to prevent it? . for me it all boils down to the security at the two compounds there was grossly inadequate and it's something that hopefully in the future how do w

it's not like '08 when he simply returned to the senate, like john mccain. what's next for mitt romney? does he even fit into the ongoing political conversation? >> that's a good question. the nice thing about being a billionaire is that you can choose your role, most likely. i don't think we'll see governor romney trying to maintain or bring -- have any kind of leadership role in the republican party going forward. i do think, having gone through a version of this in the aftermath of 2004 with democrats where there again you had john kerry, who went back to the senate, but there still was this question about who was the leader of the democratic party. i don't think you'll see mitt romney be a part of that conversation. i would imagine he'll take some time off and kind of heal from all of this. a loss is a loss. and then decide for himself. i actually would not be surprised if we don't really see him on the national political scene much anymore. >> certainly, it is tough because you put your heart and soul into this many campaign. it is hard for him. high pr

mccain staffers could largely see the writing on the wall. most of the people from the mid-level folks on down especially looked up at the top echelon, looked at mitt romney who was projecting complete confidence, he and i sat as close as you and i are on the last day and he said we will win this thing and the people believed it. to have the bottom fall out by 10:00 or 11:00 at night we saw a lot of devastated people. >> how much longer does romney get secret service? like the things that go along with the presidential campaign, how soon does that wither away? >> the secret service is all but done at this point. he still had the agents overnight. some of the agents still around in boston the next day. their basic prerogative is to make sure protesters aren't going to overrun his house and the baseline level of security is there. and with the romney family, largely spread out across the country, no young kids in boston their work is all but done at this point. back to a private citizen by today. >> what's the headline for you having been a fly

john mccain almost lost the republican primary season in 2008 because he was in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. he had to double back. they're going to have to get out of that. they're going to have to be able to say there is a different path forward, not just to citizenship, but to dealing with immigration as an issue, which is complicated, understandably. but start with more actually free market type of solutions and say, hey, look, why are we micromanaging the number of immigrants from each and every country? why don't we expand the number of visas? start with that, certainly. start shutting down people who use immigration as a very passionate and very irrational issue from which to sort of project all of their fears. >> we are already starting to see and hear some of that from folks on the right. let's switch gears and talk about this year's electorates. according to exit polls, there's been a steady decline of white voters. in 2008, they made out 80%. in 2004, you see it go down. in 2012, we're looking at about 72%. here's today's salon article. america, love it or leav
